Many of the technologies by which our culture is defined (the interstate highway system, FEMA, lasers, satellites, color photography, and the internet) were invented in relation to nuclear technology. Originally conceived as a threat to our existence, it simultaneously has the enormous potential to create our culture. One of the most enlightening points in Valerie Kuletz’s The Tainted Desert was her account of how scientific rhetoric during the atomic age has reduced Nature to power, energy, and information.

She traces this shift in the perception of nature back to a particular school of biological thought, the invention of ecosystems. Largely funded by the Atomic Energy Commission, and part of the Atoms for Peace program during World War II, Eugene Odum’s experiments utilizing radioactive isotopes in order to understand “flows” of energy helped establish the concept of ecosystems. His idea was that nature could be read as a closed feedback system, through which energy flowed. Diagrams with colored arrows illustrating the flow of energy in a neat circle were produced at this time and are still ubiquitous in today’s biology textbooks, demonstrating how this concept has been “naturalized” and accepted by our culture. It seemed reasonable to me that any scientific research would be subject to political influence and cultural trends, but the invention of the ecosystem (a concept I was taught on my first day of environmental science in high school biology class) in order to justify the continued production of nuclear energy and waste struck me as particularly perverse. The incestuous relationship of science and politics became clearer than ever for me in this chapter, as Kuletz explained how this “closed loop” concept was used to naturalize capitalism, and thus bring nature into the “closed loop” of economic production, quantifying it, making it easier to exploit through the shared terminology of ecology and economics (power, energy, productivity).

This quantification and “flattening” of dynamic ecological systems in basic science education teaches an illusion of control over nature. Furthermore, the fact that the system is illustrated as a “closed loop” makes predicting the future (even of a 240,000-year half-life) seem believable, making the burden of toxic waste for countless generations into the future seem feasible, “natural”, and fair. And don’t worry, Science has all the bases covered: the cyclic aspect of an ecosystem model disallows for the existence of waste at all. Think about that next time you’re dragging your trash to the curb.

I first discovered The Lifted Brow edited by Ronnie Scott—-self-described “biannual attack journal”—-two years ago at Melbourne’s Emerging Writer’s Festival. It didn’t surprise at the time, after countless aimless walks over the previous few months had ended in hidden gallery spaces, epic graffiti, that two cities with an exuberance for the down ‘n dirty creativity that makes art happen imperfectly NOW produced such a satisfying compilation of writing.

Lifted Brow Issue 7 is a robust collection of stories with moments of lyrically sublime prose, but just as often it is uncomfortable, indulgent, and with stories that might make the more innocent squirm. Take Robert Shearman’s Cold Snap: I’m sucked into his transformations Santa Claus into a soup-slobbering villain, and then lost for pages of ordinary family drama. I’m charmed, repulsed, and at the same time confused with Michaela McGuire’s tale of the Wooroolin B&S Ball, which I’m still unclear on whether it is a dating service or a food fight.

Yes, there are plenty of moments in this volume of heavily lust-driven prose to make me cringe, but there are also moments of wondrous poetic satisfaction, not the least from Nick Modrzewski—–

If you can wade through a few too many dense and plot-lacking narratives you’ll find plenty of witty gems, like Blake Kimzey’s chuckle-a-bly-crass tale about inventing a new breed of pit bull, or dare I say cute coming out of the closet (WHAT CLOSET?) story by Tim McGuire.

houseplant vacation

Blasting some cheese comp. called Sounds of Hawaii is psychedelic.

i live 13 blocks from the ocean in Long Beach now and i’ve been to three record stores around here. good record shop organization is hard to find. the best record store i’ve ever been to, that understands sub-genres of umbrella genres, is Weirdo Records in Cambridge, MA.
The Amoebas are too big and the pricing is too clinical, you can’t find a deal anywhere! In Greenpoint there’s a cafe/record shop (Eat) where I found one of my most treasured albums: LAS VEGAS GRIND! Sleazy Cheesy bad!

i will forever pimp these compilations of horn-y sax strip lounge rock ‘n roll.

i think i’m going to say that psychedelic is not even a genre but more on the lifestyle side of things. it’s a slight distortion of perceived reality. it’s a very internal thing and it’s not necessarily Arthur Lee’s Love, you know?

i’m disappointed in record shops, at their inability to see subtleties in the very thing they love, and are supposed to know, the most.

I’m still trying to say you shouldn’t need drugs for a psychedelic experience. And most of the scum sleazebags behind that plastic tab labeled “psychedelic” in wavy lines just came along at the right time to record and release dripping shit you’d NEED to be on drugs to even fucking listen to.

some other things going on i consider psychedelic:
-Hammer Museum (Los Angeles) idea of a houseplant vacation.
Someone created a luxury experience for your plant, a “cultural retreat.” you drop off your houseplant for the month of August, every Saturday they have readings, performances and musical events for the plants in the light-flooded terrace they are vacationing in. plus you sign a waiver for the whole thing.

for a few months i lived around a hill from her and her special arizona license plate and we knew each other through my manbabe-o and then we were at the same Dennis Hopper tribute screening of The American Dreamer (total patheticallypoorly-disguised misogynistic immature crap SO BAD i lost all the respect for hopper i was expecting to gain) and she took a picture of the back of my jeans jacket that i will probably only ever embroider 3/4 done and told me her art was upstairs so i looked and it was EXACTLY WHAT I LIKE! stolen section of descriptive quote: “…offensive, beautiful masterpiece. A collage of porn, wild animals, duct tape and glitter.”
This was at a place called Show Cave, in Glassell Park, or Highland Park or Eagle Rock…whatever.
The show was called Street Witches.
